The two headed for the checkout with the basket. Taku was a bit surprised to see a clerk "signing" with a customer.
"Is that sign language?" Taku whispered into Chii's ear.

"That's right, Taku. You are getting the idea. Clerks in this store learn sign language from a volunteer class. That customer is a member of the class, too."
"Chii, why do you know all about this? You have the scoop on everyone around here."
"I'm not a spy. I just know these things because I study sign language at the same class," she said smiling. Chii was a bit of a magician who gave away the secrets of her tricks. It still did not make her less wonderful in Taku's eyes. The girl seemed to do everything.
Taku was getting all sorts of surprises.
